Burleigh Heads takes its name from a headland that surveyor James Warner called Burly Head in 1840 for its imposing shape, a name later softened to Burleigh. The township itself was surveyed in 1871, with the first land sales following in 1872 along Tallebudgera Creek. The headland at the heart of Burleigh Head National Park was formed between 20 and 23 million years ago from lava flows off Mount Warning, and the point below it, known simply as The Point, is one of the most famous surf breaks in Australia, host to the Quiksilver Pro and the Breaka Burleigh Pro.
The row of Norfolk Island pines along the esplanade was planted in 1934 by the Justins family, whose name still marks Justins Park on our map of the area. The original railway station here opened as Booningba in 1903 before being renamed West Burleigh in 1915, and the James Street precinct it once served is now the local cafe and retail strip. A G:link tram extension linking Burleigh Beach to Broadbeach has been under construction since 2022. The park itself is managed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, and Burleigh Heads sits alongside our Broadbeach and Robina service areas, as well as the rest of our Gold Coast service areas.
